End of the world
This mixed media piece was created after a long day of consevration work mixed in with trying to plan outfits for a music festival. Basically after facing the grim facts of climate change manifesting into dead baby sea turtles I wanted to clear my mind and have fun.
But as i searched for clothes to wear I surfed through pages of fast fashion and had a little existential crisis about how hard it is to live sustainably and to live fulfilled and content in a society built on capitalism as the infrastructure crumbles under climate duress.
This collage and painting was a stream of consciousness response to that feeling. I sat down with a bunch of magazines, scissors, and paint. At the end I was staring into my brains struggle over the topic.
As a conservationist, I constantly face the morbid front lines of climate change and it can be hard to balance that while living a healthy 20 something lifestyle in South Florida. Sometimes the balancing act gets to my head and I need to make art about it.
If anyone else struggles with feeling guilty for just living their life because they know how negatively impactful our everyday American actions are, I'd like to remind you of this:
A million people living sustainably imperfectly, will always make a larger impact than 100 people doing sustainability perfectly.
P.S. that little purple painting incorporated into the big one is a self portrait oh la la
